How to check water adulteration in Milk by using Lactometer in Home?

Milk is a common drink of our daily diet. But mostly time, it may have Urea, Formalin, Vanaspati, Starch and water as impurity. Packed milk from brands as well as milk purchased from milk-vendors can be adulterated so it is always better to check for them before consuming.
Water turns out to be the most common adulterant in milk. It reduces the nutritional value of milk. If contaminated, water poses a health risk to consumers. 
How to check water adulteration in Milk by using lactometer :
A lactometer measures the density of milk. It tells the user how much water is in the milk that is being sampled. This is an instrument used to determine the richness of milk.
Lactometer : Measure the amount of water in the milk. A Lactometer is used to find out the amount of water in the milk. It works on the principle of specific gravity of milk. It consists of a Test-Tube and a Meter Bulb.
Using this instrument is very simple. Put some milk in the test-tube. Dip the meter bulb in it, the bulb going in first. You will notice that the meter bulb floats. The reading on the meter indicates how pure/impure your milk is.
The deeper the bulb sinks, the more dilute/impure the milk. If the reading is at the red mark, it shows that the milk is rich and pure.
Milk is one of the most important ingredients for children's overall development, it is essential for adult health as well. Milk is also widely used in food item like desserts, baking, tea and coffee etc.
Most of the commonly used adulterant for milk includes Detergent, White Paint, Caustic Soda, Refined Oil and glucose
The most common reason for milk adulteration is the difference between demand and supply of milk. In order to meet the demand, the suppliers usually adulterate the milk and increase the quantity.
The adulterants like Salt, Detergents and glucose add to the thickness and viscosity of the milk while starch prevents curdling of milk
These adulterants are hazardous and cause irreversible damage to the human body. 
The detergents in milk caused food poisoning and gastrointestinal complications. The other synthetic compounds cause impairments, heart problems and cancer.
Due to lack of hygiene in milk handling and packaging, detergents (used during cleaning operations) are not washed properly and find their way into the milk. Other contaminants like urea, starch, glucose, formalin along with detergent are used as adulterants. These adulterants are used to increase the thickness and viscosity of the milk as well as to preserve it for a longer period.

Adulteration of water in milk is so common in India. But it is not much toxic to health as adulteration of drinking water is.
Water Adulteration Test in Milk without Lactometer :
  • 1) Slip Test : To identify adulteration from water, a simple test is milk slip test. Run the drop of milk on smooth or polished surface. Pure milk leaves some residue or traces behind. However, milk mixed with water will simply flow out. 
  • 2) Reduction Test : Boil milk on slow heat for 2-3 hours till it solidifies and become hard (khoya). Rock solid, rough residue means the milk is adulterated while oily residue means its of good quality.
  • 3) Checking for Synthetic Milk : Synthetic milk is made by mixing chemicals and things like soap in natural milk. Synthetic milk can be easily identified by bad taste. It feels soapy when rubbed and turns yellowish when heated.

Lactoperoxidase system (LP-s) In Milk

1. What is Lactoperoxidase?

Lactoperoxidase is an enzyme, which is naturally present in fresh raw milk. Bovine milk contains about 30mg/l of Lactoperoxidase and the concentration is fairly constant throughout the lactation. Lactoperoxidase has no antibacterial effect on its own but has the ability to oxidise the thiocyanate ion (SCN–) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (these components also exist naturally in tears, saliva, and gastric juices). The resulting chemical compound has an antibacterial effect in fresh raw milk. Against some species of normal gut flora such as streptococci and lactobacilli, the resulting compound has a bacteriostatic effect (inhibiting bacterial growth) while it has bactericidal effect (killing bacteria) against some gram-negative bacteria, i.e. Escherichia coli, pseudomonads.

Education sector should not be supervised by the law that regulates a noodle company

Both academic and financial investment of the private sector in Nepal’s has become immense. The state, civil society and academicians have duly accepted its role in quality education. But, the private education in Nepal is not free from criticism–for being too business-oriented and not agreeing to the government directives in many cases. On the same backdrop, Sushil Koirala of sopannews caught up with Principal of the Pokhara-based Srijana Higher Secondary School, Mr. Dol Raj Pandey, to unveil many dynamics of private education in the country.

You are in the education field almost for three decades now. How would you share your journey and experience in education sector?

Prior to establishing Srijana Higher Secondary School in 1993 with a motto of ‘Integration through education, I taught for 8 years in both the community and private schools. As the community school I taught was located in a remote area, the environment was such that system of imparting knowledge was tedious and difficult. But during the latter half of my teaching years, I could see gradual rise of awareness on importance of education.

महाशिवरात्रि

With Maha Shivaratri is edging closer, hordes of Hindu devotees from cross the country and from neighboring nations, particularly India, are converging at the Pashupatinath Temple. Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva in mid-Magha, a month in the Hindu calendar. The celebrations take place in the dark fortnight of the waning moon offering bael fruits or leaves to Lord Shiva, fasting all day and by observing an all-night vigil called jagaran.

With only nine days remaining for the festival, which falls on February 27 this year, the Pashupatinath Area Development Trust (PADT), the body responsible for managing and maintaining the temple, has begun preparation for a grand celebration.

A main committee of 35 members, which is led by the minister of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, has been formed. Similarly, 11 other committees have been entrusted with different roles during the festival such as for volunteering, managing of footwear, cleanliness, among others.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5

Samsung's much anticipated Galaxy S5 flagship, which is all set to see the light of day at MWC 2014 in Barcelona on Monday, might have been leaked in its full glory ahead of its official unveiling.
A Hardware Zone forum member named OKCATYEON has allegedly clicked a bunch of live images of the Galaxy S5. The purported leaked images show the Samsung Galaxy S5 in its full glory, and indicate the device will feature a ridged silver-coloured lining around the device. If the leaked images turn out to be real, we assume that Galaxy S5 will not be a major departure from company's Galaxy S family design. The alleged leaked image also suggests the Galaxy S5 will include a physical button on the front panel. Notably, the forum member notes the new TouchWiz is not a major overhaul from the company's previous version.


The member has also detailed some of the expected features such as fingerprint scanner. The forum member claims that the alleged fingerprint scanner feature will require the user to swipe eight times on the home button scanner to register it, and that the Galaxy S5 can register up to three different fingerprints at a time.
Further, the forum member has claimed that the scanner on the Galaxy S5 can be used with PayPal for authorisation payments for products within the browser. Other features said to arrive on the Galaxy S5 include a new heart rate sensor that is now said to be included in the device's S Health app.


About the camera on the Galaxy S5, the forum member notes that the device houses a 16-megapixel rear camera, which is very much in-line with earlier leaks. The device is also said to come with IP67 dust and water resistance, which should make the Galaxy S5 quite waterproof, like the recently unveiled Xperia Z2.
Previously rumoured specifications of the Galaxy S5 include a 5.24-inch AMOLED screen with a QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution; two storage variants- 32GB/64GB; two processor variants - Exynos 6 and Snapdragon 805, and a 3200mAh battery. The optics rumoured for the Galaxy S5 included a 3.2-megapixel front-facing shooter.
